Edan (featuring Mr. Lif) - Making Planets

Often hopping out of coffins, steady rocking while you’re rotting

Perhaps the greatest guest appearance ever? Percee-P (on the previous) track would have an argument with that, but still. Solid track all around.

Camu Tao - When You’re Going Down

I don’t understand popular hip-hop. How is this not one of the biggest songs of the year? Seriously, I imagine “the clubs” would love this.

From Definitive Jux Presents 4If you buy the download, they send you stickers and shirts and stuff.

Foreign Born - Winter Games

It’s probably important that you listen to this song.

Dec 07

Dawes - Peace in the Valley

Dec 04

Beach House - Take Care

So good… wait for it. See this.

I Was an Island - Allison Weiss

You guys should check out Allison Weiss’ new album if you haven’t yet.

Nov 12

Them Crooked Vultures - New Fang

These guys are kinda super awesome. Unfamiliar? Do the math:

  • Josh Homme - Guitar (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal)
  • Dave Grohl - Drums (Nirvana, nothing else)
  • John Paul Jones - Bass (Led Zeppelin)
Jan 14

Bon Iver - Blood Bank

A new Bon Iver track. This guy is so great.

Dec 02

Dr. Dog - The Ark

These guys are fantastic and they’re playing tonight at Webster Hall. I happen to have an extra ticket, anyone want it?

The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Without question, The Band is greatest Canadian band of all time. Canadians (with an American drummer) who came to embody the sound of a romanticized American south. As I’m sure you know, they have so many great songs that I could have posted, so I’ve settled on this old classic.

Also, my favorite fun fact about The Band is that the name suposedly comes from people referring to them as ‘the band’ when they were backing Bob Dylan, they were actually called ‘The Hawks’ at the time.

And with that, Canadian music week is dead. Long live Canadian music week!

Rock Central Plaza - My Children, Be Joyful

This song is great. It reminds me of Neutral Milk Hotel, if Neutral Milk Hotel did a concept album about being a mechanical horse.

Tomorrow, which will be my final day of Canadian music week, will conclude with the greatest Canadian band of all time. There shall be no discussion on the righteousness of that band, nor the definitiveness of the decision.

Rah Rah - Duet for Emmylou and the Grievous Angel

With a name like this, it’s got to be good. And while this song isn’t quite Gram Parsons great, but it’s pretty good.

This is from their album “Going Steady,” which is reasonably solid. They wear a good deal of influences on their sleeve throughout the album. Influences that, for a song or two, are so overwhelming it would seem as if Arcade Fire was actually in the studio with them. Then Broken Social Scene seemingly comes through to record some demo tracks with toy Casio keyboards and twangy guitars.

Nov 27

Jill Barber - Oh My My

Canadian music week does not rest on American national holidays.

While this song was written by her, she shares some of the songwriting credits on this album with Ron Sexsmith, amongst others. Give this one a shot, it’s great and a perfect listen while coming out of a turkey induced coma.

Nov 26

The Constantines - Trans Canada

I declared my love for Canadian music and have been posting it throughout the week. Today I’m upping the ante by posting a song by Canadians with “Canada” in the name. What will tomorrow bring?

This song is great.

Nov 25

The Paper Cranes - I’ll Love You Until My Veins Explode

Yesterday I claimed that I’d continue posting Canadian music as the week progressed. I’m making good on that promise by posting one of my favorite songs from the past few months. This whole album plays like a band that spent several months listening to The Cure and then went immediately into the studio to record an album in one long three day weekend… in a good way.

I heard this song and immediately wanted the whole album. I searched and searched for months and months until I came upon my new love, who happened to carry it in flac.

Nov 24

Wintersleep - Weighty Ghost

Lately, I’ve been of the opinion that “if it’s not Candian, it’s crap” when it comes to music. This is an odd position for someone raised just outside Chicago who moved to NYC by way of 5 years in Portland. In fact, I’ve spent no more than two uneventful nights in the Great White North. It is however, for the moment, fact. I’ll post more Canadian music as the week progresses.

The Smoking Popes - First Time

This is the first real studio release (and a new recording) of a very old song by some old friends of the family. They had a great band, signed to major label, released a couple of really great albums and then broke up in their prime. They’ve gotten back together. I’m so glad this song finally came out. It’s pretty great, if you’re into that sort of thing.

May 16

Francis and the Lights - Striking

Justin recommended this to me last night. It’s one of the best things I’ve heard in a while. You can even download the whole EP for free. With bonus tracks on the official muxtape.

May 15

Chris Bathgate - Serpentine

This is another soft and slow one, it’s really great though.

If you like slow jams like this, you may be able to sit all the way through iliketheslowjams. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try this one

Bonnie “Prince” Billy - The World’s Greatest

This is an R. Kelly song.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy put it on his amazing 2007 album “Ask Forgiveness,” to which I’m incredibly late to the party. The album also has “I’ve Seen it All” (Björk) from Dancer in the Dark. It’s really something.
