Serious question about design
I’m trying to learn more about design and UI in general. Looking around the web and talking to people I hear two words over and over again: clean and simple. While I’m not looking for philsophical answers, I am interested in finding out what goes into good design.
More specifically, how would you describe good design without using the words “clean” and “simple?”
-
Zhony answered: First ‘fuctional’ and ‘good taste’ is required, that’s good design!
- answered: Refreshing, organized, eye-catching, clear and clutter-free (though I guess saying that is sort of cheating).
-
alexo answered: there are clean and simple things that are so fucking bored. i think it has more to do with identity and functionallity.
- answered: aesthetic and affordance
- answered: tidy?

matiasjajaja answered: depends, I think that in the case of interface design, they should help the use of the tool or application

app103 answered: The design should never distract you away from the content or the message. On the contrary, it should draw you towards it.

jstn answered: cultural/temporal sensitivity is important, too. good design for one audience may not be for another. also: lots of gradients.
- answered: Beautiful, intuitive transparency
-
marco answered: Design as if you’ll need to hand-paint every element, pixel by pixel, in MS Paint, without the bucket, line, or shape tools.
-
jackzerby answered: Every element has a specific purpose/reason
-
ledebugger answered: I’d say, it’s all about user experience and more important, it doesn’t have to be dull !
-
shawnyeager answered: Good design compels me to want to use/touch/interact/experience the object, physical or otherwise.

officiallyrad answered: compelling experience

soxiam answered: problem solving

ohthehumanity answered: I would compare it to song writting. Great lyrics say the most with the least # of words. Hard to quantify, but you know it when you see it.
- answered: intuitive/utilitarian, though I’m a pragmatist and a sucker for things that “do” things.
-
heykurt answered: Good design should allow me to focus on what I’m doing, not how I’m doing it.
- answered: Intuitive.
